What Are Private Label Products?
Before we dive into the private label product ideas themselves, I’d like to give you some context on private labeling.
So what are private label products?
Let’s look at a simple definition from Wikipedia:
Private label products are those manufactured by one company for sale under another company’s brand. Private-label goods are available in a wide range of industries from food to cosmetics.
Simply put, a private label product has your brand name on it but is manufactured by someone else.
Many of the products you see on Amazon, eBay and other popular marketplaces are private label products.
In fact, Amazon itself has two private label product lines:
- Pinzon—products for bedding and bath
- AmazonBasics—products for work and home

Over the past few years, private labeling has become widely popular, with many eCommerce and online businesses selling products manufactured by another company as their own products.
However, the truth is that setting up a private label business isn’t easy.
If you want to sell private label products, you’ll need to consider the many things outside your control.
On the other hand, this business model can be extremely successful, as many private label businesses have become best sellers on Amazon through discovering trustworthy private label manufacturers and selling profitable products.
So what do you need to know and pay attention to as a private label seller?
Here are three things that I consider to be critical.
1) Product Research
First things first.
To build a successful private label brand and sell Amazon products that people love, you have to conduct thorough product research.
Everything starts with good product ideas. These should be things that you already have some knowledge about and think have the potential to sell big on Amazon (and other marketplaces).
For example…
Luckily for you, we’ve created some great resources on product research to get you started.

2) Private Label Manufacturers
This is the point where almost every company private label brand fails.
You see, private labeling and dropshipping requires you to find and start working with a trustworthy and reliable private label manufacturer.
As your online business is growing—regardless of whether you’re selling on Amazon or have your own eCommerce store—you may have to work with more than one manufacturer.
You therefore have to be sure that the people you choose to work with will make good business partners.
This process can be a bit time-consuming, especially if you start your research for product label manufacturers on Google.
The best place to start from is Alibaba:
Some quick research on Alibaba will let you know how easy it is to find a private label manufacturer for your product ideas.
You can use Alibaba’s product categories to make your research easier.
Of course, sourcing products from Alibaba has both advantages and disadvantages.
You can find them all—along with useful information on how to find reliable private label manufacturers for your Amazon FBA or eCommerce business (i.e. Shopify)—in the following guide:
→ How to Quickly Find Private Label Manufacturers (Updated 2019) ←
As you’ll see in the next chapter, there are tools like Sourcify that take care of the tough process of sourcing, finding and negotiating with manufacturers, allowing you to focus on other aspects of your online business.
Author’s Tip: Before you decide to contact a manufacturer, make sure to check all the positive and negative reviews the manufacturer has on their page.
Let’s move on to the third aspect of starting a private label business you need to pay attention to.
3) Shipping Cost, Shipping Time, Minimum Order Quantity
Many Amazon sellers are excited about starting a new product line (e.g. starting a T-shirt line), only to later realize that their online business isn’t viable.
Unfortunately, when it comes to private labeling—besides offering a great customer experience—you have to care about things like shipping cost, shipping time and minimum order quantity.
A product may seem cheap at first, but you have to consider the shipping cost and import taxes to get it:
- To your own eCommerce business on Shopify or any other platform
- To Amazon fulfillment centers if you’re an Amazon FBA seller
- Directly to your customers if you have a dropshipping business
Thus, one of the first things you need to look at when sourcing for private label manufacturers is the shipping cost.
You can also contact the seller directly to see what the shipping time and production capacity is, so that you won’t have any surprises.
You can do this in the Company Profile page for each Alibaba seller:
The next thing you need to pay attention to is the Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ).
The good thing is that most manufacturers on marketplaces like Alibaba have a Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) for all their product listings.
The MOQ is something that can affect the overall cost of the products you order.
Thus, you need to make sure that a) you need that specific quantity and b) you can cover the cost and still have a good profit margin.
But keep in mind that when it comes to private labeling, you have to pay for the goods you’re going to order upfront.
Now that you know what private labeling is and where you can find private label product ideas, let’s look at the difference between private label and white label products.

How to Start a Private Label Business
At this point, let’s see how you can start your own private label business.
By creating your own private label brand, you’re able to charge more for your products and get a better profit margin.
You’re able to control the quality, style, and feel of your own brand better than if you were selling a generic product.
Above all, you can build your own brand name. Now the question is:
How can you private label products?
It really comes down to 4 steps:
- Find a successful private label product idea
- Find a private label manufacturer
- Build a strong brand
- Sell your product
The goal here is to create a brand that your customers are eager to buy and tell people about.
When you take the time to properly source your products, create a brand you love, and learn how to sell it effectively then you have a great online business on your hands.

There are road bumps along the way to private labeling and this route often takes longer to grow than, let’s say, a dropshipping model.
Therefore, these are the two things you need to consider before starting.
- Overseas Manufacturing: As much as you might save on cost, a difficult part of creating a private label brand is manufacturing your products. As a result, this is the biggest barrier to entry. People face fraud or production of poor quality products abroad. You can streamline this with Sourcify.
- Upfront Investment: The one downside of starting a private label brand is you have to buy inventory upfront, without knowing how much you’ll be able to sell.
A great tool to source products from China is Sourcify:
Sourcify will help you find the right overseas factory for your products.
They will help with supplier negotiation, improve product quality, and increase margins
that allow your brand to grow.
Here’s the deal:
Through our manufacturing company Sourcify, we learned that private labeling enables you a freedom in business other business models can’t provide:

Seems like if you compare these “road bumps” with the opportunity for private labeling product, it’s clear that creating your own brand to start your business is worth it.

This is another timeless product idea for a private label business.
People will always look for and buy beauty products.
Again, as with hair products, most of these are not seasonal.
Just one piece of advice: don’t choose to sell yet another generic beauty product (a me-too product).
Do your research and find something that truly stands out.

I am in the process of starting an organic skin care line private label business. It’s already expensive investing in organic products. What I am not sure about is the pricing for the products. Not sure if it will be profitable
I am much interested on Tracking device and Phone Accessories.
That niche is huge and there is so much potential! People still haven’t adopted it fully and they are still selling like crazy 🙂
Branding is still a key for startups and small businesses, as these cannot compete on pricing. This is especially obvious on marketplaces, such as Amazon.com
Hi Nathan,
I like these ideas, it is very sensible and can surely help promote the product. I am planning to have a business online and I would include this idea in my business plan.

Your brand and your customer advocacy is what will make you go to the top and be known. This is a great way to make business owner understand the process of having a private label products.
Like the ideas much especially “smart backpack”.
“A brand is the set of expectations, memories, stories and relationships that, taken together, account for a consumer’s decision to choose one product or service over another.”
– Seth Godin
Choose your brand wisely gentlemen!
If wish to get manufacture and sell cervical support cushion which can be used while working on computer and pillow at sleep under a brand name.
Branding your products can give you immense amount of leverage. Recently, I saw a video regarding an FBA model on YT, the lady sold her brand to a firm for 5 million, which she started just 2 years back.
So, it could potentially be worth spending your time in effective branding. Though quality of the product should be a must consider factor too.
Absolutely quality products will bring you repeat customers! Branding is what will bring awareness to your private label brand. Starting a business is a mix of both! Thanks for the comment 🙂
