You can't come off as a marketer on Reddit and expect success, any more than you can come off as a pick-up artist and pick up a girl that's, well... not already extremely interested anyway. As I often say, there are only two things you need to be in business: 1) access to a thing of value [like your udemy course] and 2) a way to communicate with people that value that thing! Your post here reminds us that you must speak the language of the tribe you are addressing. And while Reddit is a source of bookoo traffic, there are certain unwritten codes of conduct, certain rules of etiquette that will grant you entrance... or if broken, will bar you from access. Thanks for helping me with MY learning curve. As the Bros will tell you, I'm slightly older than dirt ;-) but I remember becoming disgusted with "the Man", becoming unemployable at 16 and striking out on my own as an entrepreneur. But that was over 30 years ago (gulp) and Reddit is what my SON does, not me. Yet. Thanks for the tips and the infographic. "Be a redditor not a marketer" - very wise advice. I discovered this a few months ago when I accidentally posted a link to my personal account instead of my 'business' account. The result was a far more positive response in the comments, more upvotes and more clicks. I'm surprised by how willing some/many redditors are to downvote companies or anyone who's marketing something, even if their post and/or link is very useful. The personal approach is definitely the way to go, thanks for the excellent and very actionable post.

You could look into reddit advertising and market on reddit that way, but I'd strongly consider a content strategy for your business. There is something you can write about that is related to the things you sell or is valuable to your customers. Find what that is and start creating great content.
Hey John, I would start a blog begin to create some content around whatever you are selling. Things like "Top 10 [Your Niche] Products" or "Products to get ready for summer" or maybe write some stories about how customers use your products. The things that perform well on Reddit are usually pure content. If you want to drive traffic directly to your ecommerce offers without making content, you may want to just take out some Reddit ads! Hi Traffic is very important for a blog/website to survive. Be cautious while going for reddit traffic. Because it is bit different to handle, anything found spam will be put on stealth ban. Focus on maxing out the earned and free media before shifting into paid media tactics, especially if you're bootstrapped. There are hundreds of startup blogs out there, so focus on the top ones: Betalist, ProductHunt, Launching Next and Launching.io. You may not get listed by all 4, but if you're listed by one or two, you'll start seeing your startup shared across Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and tech blogs.

I joined reddit recently and was having trouble understanding it since it has its own string of rules that contradict the rules themselves ironically....So I was having problemtrying to understand the system... I am amazed by their hypocrisy ...My account was blocked too .... I knew Reddit was a hit but not to this degree. I had posted something genuine out of the Elite Dangerous community (how much money was 1000 years in the future and how much ships would cost). Until later 2016 it was the most visited page on my site and was responsible for over half my karma for the entirety of my 2 years on the site. Quite profound.

You are right Travis. Basically, I'm promoting my youtube videos on Reddit and generate good amount view as like as sell every day. Reddit is clean and spams free social media that's why their visitor have quality. Forget the spamming if you want really do something good with Reddit.

Very hot photo :) I have tested reddit recently. As this article says, you need to post interesting or funny things. And things relevant to the subreddit. It surprised me because my post that had more karma was the one where I made a joke. While promoting my product, I was talking about dogs favorite movies.

Hi Travis, I am using Reddit for many years but never got at that kind of success, which I got on other social networks like Stumbleupon, DIGG, FB, Delicious. I banned so many accounts Reddit because I never knew why they are banning. After all my experiences I ran one account for almost 2 years. Now I am working very sensibly and generating 100-200 sessions per month for my site I am posting in relevant subreddits and keeping the good ratio of my links and other links also.
I just created my Reddit account two days ago and I am really delighted to find this helpful article as I am planning to use Reddit to gain additional traffics, other than search engine, my a site I am developing. A good read!! Another thing to mention is the backlinks you get from Reddit. I once shared an article on a particular subreddit, and it went on to receive at least 100 upvotes. It generated a lot of traffic from Reddit, but the best thing was that I got many backlinks due to the same. Within a day, my article was showing up on the first page of Google Search results for those particular keywords. It was all due to the backlinks from Reddit. You get a backlink, every time someone comments on your post. Thank You.
